NSFAS eligibility criteria and conditions for funding




To be eligible for NSFAS funding, an applicant must meet the following criteria :


  • Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident with a valid South African ID number.



  • Come from a family with a combined annual household income of not more than R350 000 per annum (in the case of students with a disability, the income threshold is R600 000 per annum).



  • Be registered or intending to register for an approved qualification at a public university or TVET college.



  • Not have completed a previous qualification, unless applying for an approved funded postgraduate qualification.



  • Not have received NSFAS funding in previous years, unless they have passed their modules and meet the academic requirements.



  • Meet the academic performance requirements as specified by NSFAS and the institution.



NSFAS application process and required documents




To apply for NSFAS funding, an applicant must follow these steps:

  • Submit your application.



The required documents for the application are:


  • A copy of your ID or birth certificate.



  • A consent form signed by your parent(s), guardian, or spouse to submit their personal information for validation and verification.



  • A copy of your parent(s), guardian, or spouse's ID.



  • A proof of income of your parent(s), guardian, or spouse (payslip or appointment letter).



  • If you are a SASSA grant recipient, no proof of income is required.



  • If you are a person with a disability, a completed disability annexure form.

Reasons for appeal and rejection




Some of the common reasons for appeal are:


  • You applied for NSFAS funding but did not receive a response or outcome.

  • You applied for NSFAS funding but were rejected due to exceeding the income threshold, even though you have proof that your household income has decreased or is below the threshold.



  • You received NSFAS funding but it was withdrawn or discontinued due to academic performance, even though you have proof that you passed the required number of modules or credits.



  • You received NSFAS funding but it was insufficient to cover your fees or expenses, even though you have proof that you registered for an approved qualification and institution.



Some of the common reasons for rejection are:


  • You did not meet the NSFAS eligibility criteria or conditions for funding.



  • You did not submit your application or appeal within the specified deadlines.



  • You did not provide sufficient evidence or motivation to support your appeal.

Appeal process and deadlines
